Hehe. No it can be other possibilities as well but I'm no expert :)
If the volume is not mute in windows, then there's a possibility of the driver issue.
Unfortunately I am using Windows7 right now, but I will try it from my memory. :)
Right click on My Computer, click "properties" and then click on "Hardware" tab, click on "Device Manager" button. If you see any icon with question mark then it's the driver issue, otherwise it's something else.
Do tell me what it says. :)
